What is this Pre-Ascension and Post-Ascension everyone is talking about? Does it somehow change the game?

Ascension is something that happens during the course of the story .. and since it has to do with plot, that's really about all we're allowed to say about it.
It is being used as a makeshift 'divider' of sorts to identify BWE content, and content that will be in retail, since the last BWE mission is Sanctum Cay - which ends with Vizier Khilibron telling the player's group that they are the Chosen, and must Ascend to defeat the White Mantle's unseen gods.
